1.      Lucius:

I will, my lord

Brutus:

It must be by his death; and for my part,

I know no personal cause to spurn at him.

But -------------------------------------------

How -------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------questions

And that craves wary walking.

i)Where does this scene take place? Who is Lucius? What has he been asked to do?

Ans: This scene takes place in Brutus’ orchard (garden) in Rome. Lucius is the servant of Brutus. He has been asked for a lit candle to be brought to Brutus in his study.

ii)In what mood is Brutus? What does it refer to? Whose death is suggested?

Ans: Brutus is in confined mood. It refers here to Rome. Caesar death is suggested. He feels that Caesar’s death will be for the general good of Rome.

iii) Who has convinced Brutus to take such a step? What is the motive of Brutus for taking such a decision as expressed in the extract? What does it reveal about Brutus?

Ans: Cassius has convinced Brutus to take such a step. The motive of Brutus for taking such a decision is to protect Rome from Caesar’s tyranny. It reveals about Brutus that he is patriotic and idealist.

iv) What danger does Brutus foresee if the person is crowned as a king? How is this danger expressed by referring to the bright day and the adder?

Ans: Brutus foresees that if Caesar is crowned as a king, he would change his character and would become a tyrant. The bright day and adder refer that a warm bright day brings out the snake. So similarly once Caesar crowned as a king he would bring out the tyrant in Rome.

v) What your feelings for Brutus at this juncture? Give two reasons to justify your feelings.

Ans: I feel angry at his justification for a gruesome murder. Brutus has made up his mind to kill Caesar. Brutus does not have a particular personal grievance against Caesar. His argument points to the fact that Caesar has to be assassinated not for what he is at present but for what he could become in future. Brutus says that once Caesar crowned, he will be beyond the power of anyone else to check him.

2.      Brutus;

So Caesar may;

Then, lest he may, prevent. And since the quarrel

Will bear no color for the thing he is,

Fashion -------------------------------------------------

Would run--------------------------------------extremities;

And ----------------------------------------------------------egg

Which --------------------------------------------------mischievous

And kill him in the shell.

i)’So Caesar may’ what may Caesar do? Your answer must refer to the metaphor of the ladder, used by Brutus in his speech. How does Brutus intend to prevent Caesar from doing so?

Ans: Caesar may rise to a powerful position as he is ambitious man, if he is served with the ladder of humility. When he rises high, the climber pays attention upwards. He forgets the ladder which helped him to climb.

ii)Give the meaning; ‘And since the quarrel/will bear no colour for the thing he is/fashion it thus’.

Ans: It means that Caesar is being accused for what he is. So for there is no cause to quarrel with him for what he is now.

iii)What is meant by augmented? How can Caesar be augmented? How had there already been an attempt to augment him?

Ans: Augmented means power increased by being crowned as a king. The people of Rome can help Caesar to be crowned as a king. He had already earned lot of support from the people of Rome since he had defeated the Pompey’s sons. So the crown has been offered to him at the celebration of the feast of Lupercalia.

iv)To whom is a serpent’s egg compared? What does Brutus want to communicate by using comparison of a serpent’s egg?

Ans: Caesar is compared as a serpent’s egg for becoming a powerful man. Brutus communicates by using such a comparison that Caesar will become a tyrant, dangerous like a poisonous snake later.

v)What price Brutus pay later by preventing a serpent’s egg from being hatched?

Ans: Brutus justifies that serpent’s egg has to be killed before it is hatched; otherwise it will become dangerous. So Brutus decides to kill Caesar along with other conspirators. But later he faced the tragedy. His personal life as well as the republic which he hoped to protect was destroyed.

3.      Brutus:

Its good. Go to the gate; somebody knocks.

{Exit Lucius}

Since cassius first did whet me against Caesar,

I have not slept.

Between --------------------------------------------thing

The genius-------------------------------------------instruments

Like to a ------------------------------------------------------then

The nature of an insurrection.

i)To what does Brutus reply, ‘Tis good’ who is knocking at the gate? Why has he come?

Ans: Brutus replies to his servant Lucius who comes back with letters which he has found on the windowsill of Brutus’ study. Brutus reads the letters. He promises to take an action. Cassius has come with other conspirators to discuss the plan of actions to ensure success in their conspiracy and also to take a mutual oath of faithfulness.

ii)what is the impact of Cassius’ earlier discussion on Brutus?

Ans: Cassius manages to convince Brutus to join him in the conspiracy to murder Caesar. Brutus is worried and believes that the growing power of Caesar is the threat for Rome. So, he thinks that it is his duty to relieve Rome from Caesar’ tyranny.

iii)In what type of mental frame is Brutus? Why does he compare his mental condition to a nightmare or a horrid dream?

Ans; Brutus is anxious and troubled. He has nothing against Caesar but believes that Caesar’s death would be good for Rome. His mental condition is a nightmare and a horrid dream.

iv)Give the meaning of:

a)All the interim is like a phantasms… it means that everything in between is like a nightmare.

b)The genius and the mortal instruments/ are then in council… it means that the rational powers and passions of body are engaged in argument.

v)In the last lines of the extract, the mental condition of Brutus is compared to a civil war. Explain how the comparison is made.

Ans: The mental condition of Brutus is compared to a civil war means the rational powers, the genius and the passions of the body, mortal instruments, are engaged in an argument in council. And man’s nature, like a small kingdom, then suffers due to the nature of their revolt.

4.      Brutus:

They are the faction. O conspiracy

Sham’st ……………………………night,

When evils ------------------------------------------day

Where wilt -------------------------------------------enough

To mask thy ---------------------------------------------------conspiracy;

Hide it in------------------------------------------------------affability:

For if thou path ---------------------------------------------on,

Not erubus itself------------------------------------------------enough

To hide thee from prevention.

i)Who comes after this extract? How are they dressed? Who informs Brutus of their arrival?

Ans: The conspirators, namely – Cassius, Casca, Decius, Cinna Metellus Cimber and Tribonius, come after this extract. They are dressed up to hide their faces. Their hats pulled down up to their ears. Cloaks covering their faces unrecognized. Lucius informs to Brutus of their arrivals.

ii)What is meant by faction and thy dangerous brow?

Ans: The word faction means conspirators. Thy dangerous brow means forehead which refers to the appearance of the conspirators who have put on the dangerous faces to plot that they have planned.

iii)How does conspiracy disguise itself at night and during the day?

Ans: Conspiracy ashamed to show itself in the darkness of the night when evil things are most at liberty. During the day it covers and hides its face in dark cave so that nobody could recognize.

iv)What is referred to as Erebus? If conspiracy were to appear with its native semblance on’ what would happen?

Ans: ‘Erebus’is referred to hell. It’s the mythical dark region. If conspiracy were to appear with its native semblance on then the darkness of hell would not be able to hide conspirators from those who prevent their action.

v)Why is it necessary to disguise the conspiracy? Give two of the precaution taken by the conspirators to hide the conspiracy.

Ans: It is necessary to disguise the conspiracy because they would not be able to be successful in their mission. So, it is necessary to disguise to it. Hence, they used to meet in the night and they used to cover their faces so that nobody can be recognized by others.

1.      Brutus:

When need we -------------------cause,

To prick us -----------------------------bond

Than ---------------------------------------word,

And will ----------------------------------------oath

Than --------------------------------------------engaged,

That this -----------------------------------------------it?

i)Who are referred to as the ‘we’? what is our won cause’? state in your own words how the cause itself is a spur.

Ans: The group of conspirators are referred as ‘we’. ‘our own cause’ here is about the killing of Caesar for the betterment of Rome. They did not want any incentives but their own plot to kill Caesar to protect Rome from his tyranny. The conspirators think that evil prevails in Rome and they may suffer great distress if Caesar comes to power. So they want to get rid of him.

ii)Who had suggested the idea of taking an oath? Why did Brutus dismiss that idea? Was Brutus’ decision wise? Why?

Ans: Cassius had suggested the idea of taking an oath. Brutus dismissed the idea of taking an oath because he believed that all were true Romans and their cause is just; so why should need anything other than the understanding by which honorable men have bound each other to do a certain thing or die in the attempt? I think, Brutus decision was not wise because at the end he destroys everything he stood for.

iii)Explain what is meant by ‘honesty to honesty engaged’ why is honesty very important for Brutus and his men?

Ans: Honesty to honesty engage means a promise made by one honest man to another. Brutus is a true patriot and a man of integrity. Honesty is very important for Brutus because for him his personal reputation, conspirators would like to have him as their leader.

iv)Give the meaning of; ‘that this shall be, or we will fall for it’?

Ans: it means that the conspirators, being honorable men have promised to each other that they would carry out the noble act, killing of Caesar successfully or be prepared to die in the process.

v)According to Brutus, who normally takes an oath? How does Brutus convince his group to uphold Roman nobility rather than depend on an oath?

Ans: According to Brutus, normally priests, cowards, old and miserable persons and cunning fellows take an oath. Brutus is philosophical. He erroneously objects to the conspirators’ taking an oath of secrecy because they are Romans, and are united by the justice of their cause.

2.       6. Brutus:

O, name ------------------------------------him;

For ------------------------------------------thing

That --------------------------------------------begin.

Cassius: then leave him out.

Casca; indeed, he is no fit.

Decius: shall no man else be touched but only Caesar?

i)Who is him? What did Brutus want to leave him out of? What reason had just been given in his favour?

Ans: ‘Him’ is referred to Cicero. Cassius brought the question of inviting Cicero the aged man for the plot. So, Brutus reminded them to leave him out of. In his favour, they gave the reason that Cicero is irresolute and will not follow any course of action which has been initiated by others.

ii)Explain ‘let us not break with him.’ Why does Brutus say this?

Ans: Brutus says to the other conspirators not to tell Cicero about the plans because according to Brutus, he will never follow out any policy consistently as we do. Though he is the most respected member of the group and is a mature age man.

iii)What is the meaning of ‘touched here’? who else, does Cassius now mention, should be touched? What is his reason?

Ans: ‘Touched’ here means no other man is to be harmed but only Caesar. According to Cassius even Mark Antony, the best friend of Caesar should be harmed along with Caesar. He thought that Antony might trouble them as he is a shrewd man.

iv)Brutus overrides Cassius. Why? What does it reveal about Brutus?

Ans: Brutus overrides Cassius for the inclusion of Cicero into the group and even to kill Antony along with Caesar. He sets the tone for the enterprise by placing the entire undertaking within the context of a religious ceremony. Cassius concedes to Brutus’ objections because he doesn’t want to antagonize Brutus.

v)In his turn, Cassius doesn’t agree with Brutus’ ideas. State the objection put forth by Cassius and tell how his objection was later justified.

Ans: Cassius doesn’t agree with Brutus. He says that Antony will turn out to be a mischievous schemer with enough resources to cause great harm to the conspirators. He objection put forth by Cassius came to be true. Mark Antony by his powerful speech manipulated the mob and turned them against the conspirators and Brutus lost everything.

1.      Cassius: yet I fear him;

For in the in grafted love he bears to Caesar

Brutus:

Alas -----------------------------------------him.

If he ----------------------------------------can do

Is to ----------------------------------------------Caesar

And that -----------------------------------------is given

To sports ----------------------------------------------company,

Trebonius:

There ---------------------------------------not die;

For he will -----------------------------------hereafter.

(clock strikes)

i)What is the occasion for the dialogue? What is meant by ingrafted love’? name the person being talked about in the dialogue.

Ans: The occasion for the dialogue is about planning to murder Caesar along with Mark Antony too by the conspirators. ‘Ingrafted love’ means deeply rooted love. Here they are talking about Mark Antony and his deeply rooted love for Caesar.

ii)How does Brutus dismiss Cassius’ fear of that person?

Ans: Brutus dismisses Cassius’ fear of Mark Antony. He says that Antony is focused on games, irresponsible behavior and enjoying the company of large number of friends so he would not Caesar’s death much.

iii)Why does Trebonius say that there is no cause to fear that man?

Ans: Trebonius says that there is no cause to fear mark Antony because he is convinced by the reason given by Brutus that he is not a threat. So should not be taken seriously since he is greatly addicted to sports. Hence he should not be killed. Antony will continue to live and will even laugh at what has happened.

iv)Give the meaning of; ‘for he will live, and laugh at this hereafter.’

Ans; The sentence ‘for he will live, and laugh at this hereafter’ means that Antony will be not killed but he will live his life as usual and laugh at this the murder of Caesar later.

v)Which of the three men prove to be right and in what way?

Ans; The three men prove to be right are – 1. Trebonius. 2.Decius. 3. Cassius: he observed that since Antony and Caesar are the best friend, it seems a shame to let one outlive the other. Time proved him right when Antony incited the mob and made them to revolt against the conspirators by his speech. All the conspirators lost everything later because of Antony who manipulated the crowed and incited against the conspirators.
